According to Danny Ainge, the Celtics will exercise Jeff Green’s contract option at some point this week. Because of Green’s status as a restricted free agent, the Celtics have until July 1 to extend a qualifying offer to him or allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.
Extending the qualifying offer does not automatically mean Green will play for the Celtics next season. Rather, it will give the Celtics an opportunity to match any contract offered to Green this summer. Green could also choose to play next season under Boston’s one-year tender (reportedly $5,908,640), after which he would become an unrestricted free agent.
Another option for the Celtics would be using Green in a sign-and-trade deal. This would allow the Celtics to receive assets in return for Green, preferably a capable player (or capable players) in the final year of his (or their) contract(s). Because Green played so fantastically for the Celtics last season, his trade value is at an all-time high.
Just kidding.
The Celtics could also elect to keep Green by re-signing him to a long-term contract. You know, if they’re gluttons for punishment and insist on compounding the mistake of trading for Green. Okay, so maybe re-signing Green wouldn’t quite be like self-inflicting Chinese water torture. I would still prefer spending the Celtics’ cap space on somebody who plays defense, occasionally rebounds the basketball, and did not spend the second half of last year murdering his own value. Call me crazy.
