MIKE RICE COACHING 12 years old girls for AAU team in New Jersey

Sometimes real life truly is stranger than fiction .

Just a little over a week after former Rutgers men’s basketball coach Mike Rice was fired for verbally and physically abusing his players, it’s been discovered that Rice is still coaching a 12-year-old girls AAU team in New Jersey that includes his daughter, Katie.

Brian Geltzeiler of HoopsCritic.com started off a firestorm on Sunday after tweeting out that Rice was on the sideline for the AAU team and once again acting outrageously:

One of my moles is watching Mike Rice coach 12 year old girls at Holmdel High in NJ right now as crazy as ever yelling @ both refs and kids

Just this afternoon Rice told a 12 year old girl,”I can’t even look at you” and the ref told my guy he would have T’d him up 2x if it was HS — Brian Geltzeiler (@hoopscritic) April 14, 2013

It’s insane that Mike Rice is coaching a 7th grade girls AAU team out of Neptune NJ 2 weeks after those tapes went public…SMH…. — Brian Geltzeiler (@hoopscritic) April 14, 2013

Just to clarify.I’m not joking.Mike Rice is actually coaching a 7th grade girls AAU team today and he’s still acting like a mad man….

The story was picked up in numerous places and led to a backlash.

“The Deadspin report is a gross misrepresentation of the facts,” a person near the team told SportsNet New York. “The team’s parents are fully behind Coach Rice and his instruction of their daughters.”

Geltzeiler responded in kind with this:

@ pgrompone I stand by my report. If parents choose to expose their kids to that brand of coaching, I guess that’s their choice

We weren’t there to witness Rice’s coaching of the AAU team but if Geltzeiler was accurate, we wouldn’t be surprised at this point to see Rice spend next week pegging elementary kids with a dodge ball during recess.
