Rick Welts, the president of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, revealed that he was gay in a story posted by the New York Times on Sunday. On Monday, Welts said in an interview with The Associated Press that he chose such a public forum to announce his sexual orientation in order to “engender conversation” on a topic not often discussed in professional sports.
He also wanted to show young people who are struggling with their own issues that they can have a successful career, whether it be in team sports or something else.
