Carlos Arroyo and his espionage

 

The Miami Heat traded for point guard Mike Bibby back in March hoping to boost their outside shooting and to get a little bit more supplemental offense outside of JeBron Lames, DWade and Chris Bosh.  In 19 games with the Heat, Bibby has averaged 7.2 points and 2.5 assists per game.  


To clear a roster spot for him, the Heat released Carlos Arroyo, who had started 42 of the 49 games he had played with Miami.  In those 49 games, Arroyo averaged 5.6 points and 2.0 assists per game.  Arroyo has since found a home in Boston with the Celtics.  In Boston, Arroyo has not started a game.  In fact, over the last eight games, he has averaged 1.6 minutes per game.  


So why did the Celtics sign Arroyo?  They obviously don't need Arroyo's game on the court with two-time All Star Rajon Rondo taking the overwhelming majority of minutes at the one spot.  The Celtics signed Arroyo because of the 49 games he played with the Heat according to Celtics head coach Doc Rivers:

"Carlos is huge. He gave us the entire Miami scouting report."

 Arroyo is making $407,722 with the Celts.  That's a handsome price for a scouting report.  Sure, the Heat currently hold the two seed in the Eastern Conference, one game above the Celtics in the three seed, but doesn't everyone in the NBA know everything there is to know about everyone else?  The main scouting report on the Heat is to double team Wade and leave JeBron open at the end of the game.  We all know that Lames is allergic to big shots.  


It'd be one thing if Arroyo was more of a cerebral Shane Battier-type.  But I don't see Arroyo becoming the next Phil Jackson.


The early returns - yesterday Miami beat Boston 100-77.  Nice work, Carlos, or not.
